Aberdeen of Scotland summer loan signing, Funsho Ojo was on for 90 minutes in their Scottish Premiership clash away to Hibernian, but he could not save his side from losing the game by the odd goal.
While Ojo was left agonising at the end of the fixture, joy belonged to Ryan Porteous, who got new coach, Shaun Maloney’s era at Hibernian off to a winning start after scoring the only goal in a tight contest against The Dons.
The defender headed in Martin Boyle’s corner in the 64th minute to propel the hosts back up to fifth on the log, from a game of few chances and a single goal was always likely to settle the tie.
Megasportsarena.com reports that, after just two days on the training pitch with his new players, former Belgium assistant coach Maloney could draw plenty of encouragement from his first-ever match as a manager.
Despite looking dangerous in spells in the first half, the Dons struggled for ideas in the final third and dropped to seventh in the table.
Maloney made three alterations to the team, with Scott Allan, Josh Doig and Chris Cadden replacing Joe Newell, Lewis Stevenson and Jamie Murphy.
Aberdeen were dealt a pre-match blow when the team line-ups confirmed that captain Scott Brown was missing through illness. The visitors were also without the suspended Ross McCrorie.
The Hibs had plenty of energy as they looked to impress their new boss but Aberdeen were not unduly worried, even as The Dons gradually seized territorial advantage and created several half-chances.
The first arrived after 15 minutes when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ shot from 18 yards was deflected over by Doig, after which Dean Campbell whipped a first-time drive from 25 yards just wide of Matt Macey’s post.
Moments later, Macey was called on to produce a good save, this time getting down to his right to push behind a stinging Lewis Ferguson drive.
The hosts created the last chance of the opening period just before the half-hour mark, Boyle’s shot from a Doig cut-back was blocked before Kevin Nisbet then headed the rebound over Joe Lewis’ bar.
The Hibs did break the deadlock in the 64th minute through Porteous. Boyle floated in a teasing corner and Porteous rose high to bullet a header past Lewis from six yards.
Ojo and his colleagues from Aberdeen piled on the pressure late on but The Hibs’ defence held firm to claim a useful win over The Dons.
