Chelsea coach, Frank Lampard has admitted he was pleasantly surprised to see The Blues’ Nigerian-born defender, Fikayo Tomori net a wonder goal in the London club’s shock 5-2 win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but added that it was a show of the hard work being put up by the England youth international in training.
Megasportsarena.com can report that Lampard was all glitter and glare, seeing his youthful squad put doubters to shame with a second away win on the bounce, against one of the English Premier League’s most dreaded mid-class clubs, but the biggest thrill that dazed the Chelsea icon was Tomori’s sizzler from far.
Indeed, it was Chelsea’s opening goal of the evening and, though fellow-Nigerian-born in-form lad, Tammy Abraham also wowed the crowd at Molineux with a hat-trick, Lampard decide to give the biggest and brightest part of his plaudits to his former protégé at Derby Country, Tomori, who was born in Canada.
Tomori, who enjoyed loaned spells at Brighton, Hull City and Derby before he was promoted to Chelsea’s first team in the new season, kept his place in Lampard’s starting line-up, despite the return of Antonio Rüdiger from injury, as the gaffer opted to deploy a three-man defence.
Starring alongside the more experienced Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen, it was Tomori who stood out most, as he opened scoring with an outrageous curler from outside the box in the 31st minute, after which Abraham took over the show, while Romain Saiss and Patrick Cutrone both scored in the second half to reduce the deficit before Mason Mount netted in injury time.
Tomori played the full game and Abraham made way for Michy Batshuayi with 13 minutes left on the clock, after which Lampard admitted he was pleasantly surprised to see his prized lad from their days together at Derby net the opener, as the England under-21 international broke the deadlock with his strike from 35 yards out, his first goal for the club after four appearances.
Lampard retorted: ”It was a slight surprise. The confidence since he has come back from Derby is great to see. It is great for him. They must continue that.
”I hope they have the competitiveness. We look at those players, that’s how I would be. They should see their teammates like that and hoping to continue.”
