Werder Bremen of Germany youngster, Felix Agu has come out to categorically state that he is now ready to play for Nigeria at full senior level, because he wants to commit his international future to his father’s country.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that this is in contrast with the initial choice of the youngster to don Germany’s colours and he got to play for the European nation at various youth national team levels.
However, Agu has come out to declare that he only made that choice in order to gain a solid footing for his club career in the country where he was born and, now that he has cemented his place with his club, he feels the time has come to make the switch.
Consequently, Agu declared emphatically that he is now open to accepting an invitation to the Nigerian senior national team and he is eagerly waiting to hear from Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
This changes the story that initially saw the 22-year-old right-back snub Nigeria when he was contacted by Rohr to play for the Eagles in 2019, as the fast-rising defender explained that he only declined the invitation because he was already representing Germany’s under-21 team.
Alarmingly, though, he played only two friendly games for Germany’s youth team, which means he will not have to approach world soccer governing body, FIFA for a change of nationality before wearing the Eagles’ jersey.
That has spurred Agu into an enthusiastic stand that he could go all the way into playing for Nigeria at next month’s continental soccer showpiece in Cameroon, but he confessed that he is yet to hear from Rohr or anyone in the offices of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) since he last turned his back on them.
Agu, who credited with 40 appearances in the German 2. Bundesliga, with eight assists to his name and 15 games under his boots in the top-flight, told Deich Stube: “I haven’t heard anything for a long time. Maybe it will come again.
“At that time I canceled the Nigerian Association because I wanted to go to the German U21s first. Up until then I had never been to the national team and I wanted to get used to it.
“Now my time with the U21 is over. But it wasn’t a decision against Nigeria; it was a decision to keep my surroundings that are more or less familiar. Now I am open to the topic.”
