Eguavoen Set To Unfold Flexible Game Plan Based On Defensive Tactics

Nigerian football fans might be set to see a conservative style of play from the Super Eagles at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, megasportsarena.com reports.

This is sequel to a hint offered by Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen that he would love to see his lads adapt to a flexible style of play based on a lot of defensive effort.

While acknowledging that Nigerians prefer seeing their team play down the wings, ‘Egu’ went on to reiterate that he can only outline tactics that would match the type of players at his disposal.

With that in view, the former defender, skipper and head coach of the Eagles hinted that he could adopt a system based on wing-backs and midfielders adding depth to the defensive area in order not to concede goals that would mark defeat.

He went on to affirm that he will have to marshal his tactical formation based on what he sees from the 28 invited players during training, even as Nigerians prefer that the Eagles should revert to wing-play that worked so well in the team’s glory years of the 90s.

Eguavoen highlighted that the current wingers in the Super Eagles fold are not on the same level as the likes of Ajax Amsterdam legend Finidi George and ex-Barcelona star Emmanuel Amuneke, hence his verdict that the team will have to adopt defensive tactics as well.

“We’re talking about wing players offensively but you have to do a defensive job as well. For you to get on the field and then have the formation right you must have the personnel as well.

“When you talk of wing play like people are clamoring for, yes why not? That has always been our tradition but whereby you don’t have the Finidis, Amunikes, Elahos, Odegbamis from wing play, how do you achieve that?

“We have to try to be flexible as well. Yes we have these kids now. From Villarreal Chukwueze, we have Simon, going forward we can be explosive but what about defending?” Eguavoen posited during a chat with NFF TV.
