Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has promised that his squad will continue working hard ahead of Sunday’s round of 16 clash with Tunisia at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
In spite of the fact that Tunisia have lost two matches at the ongoing competition, the last of which was Thursday night against minnows Gambia, while the Eagles won all their three group matches, ‘Egu’ stressed that they will not rest on their oars.
Nigeria also has a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Tunisia in past clashes at the continental soccer showpiece, the most recent of which was a 1-0 win for the Eagles against the North Africans in the third place match at Egypt 2019.
However, despite all odds pointing in the direction of victory for Nigeria on Sunday at Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua, Eguavoen acknowledged that his side must not underrate The Carthage Eagles, who made it to the knockout stage by virtue of being one of the best third-placed teams.
Megasportsarena.com reports that the Eagles’ gaffer also hinted that he had been doing some opposition scouting even before Tunisia emerged as his round of 16 foes.
The AFCON ‘94 winner then highlighted that the North African side’s strengths are technical ability and pace, which could see him tinker with his tactics in order to counter the opposition and ensure the Eagles emerge victorious.
Eguavoen disclosed that he is already marshalling his plans for Sunday’s game, ahead of which he told NFF TV: “We are playing against Tunisia which is a strong North African team.
“They have ups and downs. The first game ended in a dramatic fashion, they have lost two penalties in two games open play. For them, having qualified for the knockout stage it is a different ball game.
“You know what knockout stage is, round of 16 if you don’t get it you’re off, if you get it you are through to the quarterfinals. It’s going to be a very different game. It is a good team.
“Technically they are very good, they are fast as well, typical North African team so we will find a way to see how we will counter them and make sure we come out top at the end of the day.
“We will continue to work hard like we’ve always done, same approach, same determination, tactics might differ a little bit so we are ready … we start working on how we will approach Tunisia game.”
