Eguavoen Downplays Worries Over Impending Clashes With Black Stars

Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has downplayed reports that he is getting worried over the team’s chances of edging aside Ghana in this month’s 2022 World Cup play-off.

Megasportsarena.com reports that, with Nigeria and Ghana set to tango across two legs towards the end of this month, apprehension is rising high among Eagles’ fans that the squad might not make it to Qatar.

That is based mostly on how the squad slipped up in the round of 16 at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but it is that same outing that Eguavoen is using as a yardstick for his confidence.

He asserted that what he saw of the players during their unsuccessful quest for a fourth conquest of the African soccer showpiece gave him an assurance that they can make it to Qatar 2022.

The former national team defender, captain and head coach admitted that the Black Stars will be a tough team to overcome across two legs, but added that he is not getting sleepless nights over it.

He posited that he is confident simply because he saw the high spirit with which the lads approached their matches in Cameroon and he has a lot of trust in the Nigerian squad’s quality.

Eguavoen, who was fondly called ‘Cerezo’ during his playing days, enthused: “We have two tough games against Ghana, but I am not too worried.

“We have a squad that knows it is a mountain that we have to climb. We have a good headache to deal with – which is a surplus of good players.

“I was impressed with the high level of discipline and commitment of the players at the AFCON in Cameroon, and I feel privileged to lead the group.

“I want to thank the Government and the NFF for all the support during the AFCON; we will need even greater support for the World Cup play-off.”
