Super Eagles’ interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has doused worries over ongoing worries over the availability or not of Watford of England defender, William Troost-Ekong for this month’s World Cup qualifier against Ghana.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that, while revealing he is in touch with the Eagles’ assistant captain, Eguavoen went on to declare that there is no need to panic over the stopper’s situation, but added that he will keep his fingers crossed until next week.
Independent checks revealed that Troost-Ekong is certainly lacking match fitness ahead of the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers playoff, as he has not played a single game for The Hornets since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
However, rather than give up on the possibility of having Troost-Ekong for the March 25th first leg in Cape Coast and reverse fixture four days later in Abuja, Eguavoen said he keeping his options open.
The gaffer opted to stay optimistic, despite a worrying remark by Watford’s coach, Roy Hodgson before the visit of Arsenal that Troost-Ekong could face a maximum of four weeks on the sidelines due to a muscle strain.
In response, though, Eguavoen disclosed that he has been in touch with Troost-Ekong and got assurances that the injury is not as bad as has been bandied in the media.
Eguavoen told allnigeriasoccer.com: “I spoke with Troost-Ekong some three days ago and he’s going to have a look at it. I’ll call him again to determine the extent of the injury.
“He told me it isn’t that bad so let us not push the panic button. He told me he was going to miss the Arsenal game, I said I’ll speak with him after.”
