Nigeria’s female basketball national team, D’Tigress forward, Evelyn Akhator has issued a fervid prayer that the ongoing coronavirus scourge across the world will come to an end very soon, megasportsarena.com reports.
In the wake of an announcement by Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari that the country’s capital, Abuja and commercial nerve centre, Lagos, will now be under total lockdown, alongside neighboring Ogun State, Akhator confessed that it is a very unusual development back home.
However, the same scenario is playing out in many countries across the world, with major cities also under total lockdown for several weeks, all of which Akhator noted had never been expected but people have to cope one way or the other.
She admitted further that COVID-19 brought about a suspension of her hopes of shinning at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, as the pandemic has caused the multi-sports gathering to be postponed till next year, which Akhator confessed was massive blow to her hopes and aspirations.
However, the USA-born basketball star enthused that she and her colleagues just have to make the best out of the tight situation, as the postponement of Tokyo 2020 Olympics will help her and other players in D’Tigress concentrate on staying safe and avoid any form of distractions or worries that would have come with thinking about travelling to compete at the Games in Asia.
Akhator posited: “Nobody was ready for this plague and we as athletes we don’t even know when this will be over and I pray it’s over soon. We were just hoping that the Olympics should be postponed because we are not ready to play basketball with all of these happenings. I think postponing it is a good thing.”
