Bayern Munich of Germany defender, David Olatokunbo Alaba appears to be inching closer to a summer transfer deal that will take him to Chelsea of England, as The Blues are said to have formally reached out to his club, megasportsarena.com reports.
In what becomes the boldest move by Chelsea to buy Alaba, after first being linked with him last summer, The Blues have now tabled a formal bid for the Nigerian-born left-back’s signature thereby providing a strong pointer at possibility of a summer exit from Munich for the Nigerian-born Austria international.
Having been in the news for a very long while about their interest in the acclaimed top left-back of world football, The Blues have now firmed up their target by opening talks with Alaba’s camp, with a view towards sealing terms of a potential move for the versatile defender during this summer’s transfer window.
The Athletic reports that The Blues are expected to be in the market for a new left-back ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, with both Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso potentially leaving the Stamford Bridge-based club this summer.
Although Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell has been strongly linked with Frank Lampard’s side and is said to be their prime target, the England international could ultimately be priced out of a move to Stamford Bridge, which is why the London club are exploring alternatives and have identified Alaba as a potential signing.
The report further claims that The Blues have been in contact with Bayern to determine whether the German Bundesliga champions would be prepared to sell Alaba this summer, but additional information reveals it is not bound to be a straight cruise all the way for Chelsea.
This is so because Barcelona and Real Madrid of Spain as well as Inter Milan of Italy have also been credited with interest in the 27-year-old Alaba, who will see his current deal at Allianz Arena expire next summer.
That has created a further buzz of wild speculation around the highly respected left-back, who was born in Austria to a mother from Philippines and father from Nigeria’ and has already made a total of 380 appearances for Bayern in all competitions, including 36 this season, in which he has largely operated as a central defender.
The Athletic added: “Chelsea are preparing a sensational transfer swoop for Alaba. Frank Lampard is determined to sign a new left-back this summer and has reportedly turned his attention to Alaba after being priced out of a move by Leicester City for Ben Chilwell.
“The versatile Bayern Munich man plays primarily as a left-side full-back, but has played the majority of games in the middle of defence this season. His contract expires next summer, but with no breakthrough over an extension to his stay at Allianz Stadium the Bundesliga champions could choose to cash in this summer.”
