Carney Chukwuemeka made his first appearance in 11 matches for Aston Villa and, with it, was Steven Gerrard’s first man from off the bench as he replaced Chambers with more than 20 minutes remaining in their 3-1 win against Burnley, Megasportsarena.com reports.
The head coach could have quite easily turned to Marvelous Nakamba, Morgan Sanson or another Nigerian Tim Iroegbunam but, no, he cherry-picked Chukwuemeka for some game time.
We’ve all read about the fall-out given the 18-year-old Nigerian’s awkward contract situation and the fact he’s turned down a couple of Villa deals but, at Burnley, it appears Gerrard issued a message, as if to say, ‘I want you a part of this group’.
Chukwuemeka, who looks much bigger compared to earlier in the season, won eight of his nine duels and was unlucky to see an effort blocked for a corner after bearing down on goal.
The Chukwuemeka situation remains a fascinating one and we’ll see how it’ll play out with a final decision surrounding his future all set for this summer.
