Glasgow Rangers of Scotland youngster, Calvin Bassey has been described as a fast-rising defender that is always ready to learn and grab new ideas, megasportsarena.com reports.
This is the verdict coming from The Gers’ coach, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who declared emphatically that he is happy seeing the strides being made by the Super Eagles’ new invitee.
With Bassey having filled in fitting into the vacuum created by another injury to fellow-Nigerian defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun, the new kid on the block is wowing many eyes in the Scottish Premiership.
Since Van Bronckhort’s arrival at Ibrox Stadium, Bassey has totaled 19 appearances in all competitions this term, which is four more than he managed in his maiden season at Rangers; hat is despite being forced to play in central defence, as against his normal role as a left-back.
The development has left Van Bronckhorst admitting he is trying to etch Bassey’s best position, as the youngster was again deployed at center back during a 1-1 draw away to Olympique Lyon of France in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
Although the youngster gave away an own goal early in the second half, Van Bronckhorst is not holding anything against the 21-year-old Bassey, who has gone the distance in all five of The Gers’ matches since the Dutch gaffer officially took over the managerial reins at Rangers.
Bassey will be thrilled hearing what Van Bronckhorst said about him, as the Dutch tactician went on to reel out some technical and tactical details, while highlighting three attributes that make the rave of the moment a modern day defender – pace, aerial presence and physicality.
Van Bronckhorst acknowledged: “I haven’t seen him play a lot as a left-back, I saw some footage but of course in my five games here he played as a central defender.
“So, I’m really happy with him. He’s got everything for a modern defender. He’s very quick, he’s good in the air, physically he’s very strong. We are just working on him with his build-up play.
“He’s a very good kid and like Nathan he’s open to learn new things, hoping to be better every game. Those kind of players will give me a lot of energy to work even harder with them.”
