Trabzonspor have won the Turkish Super League after 38 years of waiting with Anthony Nwakaeme emerging as one of their major actors in the season.
Megasportsarena.com reports that a 2-2 draw with Antalyaspor was enough to clinch the title ahead of Fenerbahçe.
Although Nwakaeme didn’t taste action on Saturday, the 33 year old Nigerian forward who was on the bench throughout the duration of the match, was mobbed by the club fans after the match.
His goals and assists proved crucial to their emergence as champions. He played 23 matches, scoring 11 goals and 10 assists.
Nwakaeme leads the Turkish Süper Lig this season in goals and assists per 90mins – 0.92
It was their first league triumph since 1984.
Trabzonspor are one of the most decorated clubs in Turkey. They have now won their seventh Süper Lig titles and were the first non Istanbul-based club to win the league.
They also have won nine Federation Cup (Turkish Cup) titles.
The club won their first championship title in 1975–76, and won three championship titles in a row in the 1978–79, 1979–80 and 1980–81 seasons.
