American boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather Jnr (Moneyman) has stirred up controversy in the roped square by declaring that the defeat of Anthony Olaseni Oluwafemi Joshua by Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk was not an upset.
This declaration comes at a point Usyk also opened up about ‘something strange’ that bedeviled Joshua before and during their bout at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London in September.
Megasportsarena.com reports that, as if on cue, Mayweather issued a broadside against the Nigerian-born former two-time triple-belt world heavyweight boxing champion.
The American legend appeared to take note of the stats, which show that Usyk’s professional record stands at 19-0 with 13 KOs, while Joshua is 24-2 with 22 KOs.
Joshua’s only other professional defeat came against Mexican-American blubbery icon, Andy Ruiz Jr, who stopped the Nigerian-born Briton in June 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, USA.
Although Joshua won his belts back during the rematch in Saudi Arabia in December of same year, he looked distraught, as Usyk eased to a unanimous decision win in London, taking the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles from the London 2012 Olympic Games gold medalist in the process.
The pair look set to face off again in 2022, with Joshua having triggered a rematch clause to fight the undefeated Ukrainian once more – likely in spring – and Mayweather warned that ‘AJ’ must be wary of a similar result.
Mayweather told British tabloid, The Mirror: “That was not an upset. It was just that Anthony Joshua was on TV, everybody seen him. Usyk was a hell of a fighter, a gold medalist if I’m not mistaken, but he was behind the scenes.
“Two guys with crazy amateur backgrounds, and one guy is not being seen and another guy is being seen, then we call it an upset.
“No, it’s just that he was working behind the scenes and another guy was working in front of everybody. Finally, they had to meet up and Anthony Joshua came up short.”
