Leicester City of England midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi has received an unlikely ray of hope for a return to action this weekend, but The Foxes’ coach, Brendan Rodgers admitted it would be a shot in the dark, megasportsarena.com reports.
Despite confessing that he would love to have the former Racing Genk of Belgium central defender-turned holding midfielder back this weekend, Rodgers admitted that the star’s chances of playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday are quite uncertain.
That is simply because Ndidi is still undergoing the process of making full recovery from a recent injury, which means he will not join his compatriot, Kelechi Iheanacho for Leicester’s latest trip to Molineux for this weekend’s English Premier League fixture.
This comes at point the highly resourceful holding midfielder was named among eight players nominated for Leicester’s Goal of the Month award for January 2021, in a ten-man shortlist for his effort in The Foxes’ 2-0 English Premier League home win over Chelsea on January 19.
Incidentally, Ndidi had gone 477 days without a goal before ending his drought against Chelsea, as he hit the ball home off the far post with his left foot, to take another leap in statistics hat showed, since joining Leicester in 2016, Ndidi has tallied nine goals in 155 appearances across all competitions
He will now compete with two sumptuous strikes from James Maddison and Natasha Flint as well as one each by Youri Tielemans, James Justin, Harvey Barnes, Charlie Devlin and Thanawat Suengchitthawon for Leicester City’s Goal of the Month prize.
The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medalist has not played for Leicester since they played out a 1-1 draw with Everton on January 27, when he bowed out after only 42 minutes due to injury, but Rodgers has now disclosed that the lad is nearing a return to fitness and will be assessed by the club’s medical team before the trip to Wolves.
Rodgers went on to disclose that, with the Nath Boys FC of Lagos product still under medical supervision, following the injury he copped in action against Everton, the ace is bound to miss this Sunday’s outing at Molineux, but should be ready to participate in the English FA Cup fifth-round clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.
Ironically, while Ndidi remains absent in the midfield, 24-year-old Iheanacho has impressed as a filler for injured Jamie Vardy, who underwent minor hernia surgery last month, and the Nigerian star opened scoring in a 2-0 victory over Fulham on Wednesday with his first EPL goal this season.
Iheanacho is expected to start again on Sunday, though Vardy has been passed fit and available to battle Wolves, as Rodgers enthused that current for from the Super Eagles’ ace has given him enough confidence to keep relying on him to make more impacts this weekend at Molineux.
Rodgers said: “The beauty of it is we don’t have to start Vardy). That’s the key. Kelechi, the other night, he was terrific in his work. We’ll see with (Ndidi) over the next 24 hours, just whether it’s worth the risk or not.
“He’s coming along very, very well. We’ll assess that. If not for the weekend, he’ll definitely be available for midweek [vs. Brighton & Hove Albion in the Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round].”
