Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons are scheduled to tango Uzbekistan’s women squad on the 20th of this month at an invitational competition in Turkey, megasportsarena.com reports.
With that date in mind, the nine-time African champions will this weekend storm the Turkish City of Antalya, where they will participate in this year’s edition of Gold City Cup scheduled to hold from February 15 to 24 at Emir Sports Complex.
The Falcons had initially been scheduled to open their campaign at the competition in Turkey against Zambia on February 17, but The Copper Queens withdrew, leaving organizers in the hunt for a replacement, but the Nigerians will battle Uzbekistan on the 20th before facing two-time African champions, Equatorial Guinea in their last group game.
It means the reigning African champions will eventually start to play under their new coach, Randy Waldrum, who was appointed in October and will now use the competition in Turkey to familiarize himself with the Nigerian squad before a friendly in Morocco afterward.
The competition and friendly are both expected to help the Falcons prepare for the 2022 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) after the cancellation of last year’s edition on account of the outbreak of coronavirus.
