Rivers United of Port Harcourt on Saturday booked a clash with Enyimba of Aba in the CAF Confederation Cup, following 3-0 victory for The Garden City side against Bloemfontein Celtic of South Africa in Porto Novo, Benin Republic.
Megasportsarena.com reports that the victory on neutral ground fetched Rivers United a 5-0 on aggregate surge over the South Africans and a ticket to confront Enyimba for a place in the group stage of the second-tier continental clubs’ competition.
Rivers United snatched a second win over Blomfotein in their first round return leg match, which was played in Porto Novo due to stiff coronavirus restrictions that prevented the South Africans from attending the original fixture billed for Port Harcourt at the start of the month.
The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, however, defied all odds to carry the day, as Godwin Aguda netted a brace and Fortune Omoniwari added a third, which confirmed a dramatic repeat from both players, who had also scored one each in their side’s first leg 2-0 way win in South Africa.
Following their latest victory in Benin Republic, where the match was played after Nigerian immigration authorities refused to set aside strict COVID-19 measures the stipulated a 14-day quarantine for the delegation from South Africa, Rivers United will now first visit Enyimba on February 14 and they play the return leg in Port Harcourt a week later.
